Innovation celebrated at Australian Institute of Architects’ 2019 Brisbane Regional Architecture Awards

A mighty 71 design projects from across Brisbane have been judged, with just 32 shortlisted for the Queensland State Architecture Awards in June.

The winners of the Australian Institute of Architects’ 2019 Brisbane Regional Architecture Awards have been announced, with the exceptional quality of innovative residential projects being praised as a highlight of this year’s competition. Judges applauded our local architects’ commitment to sustainability, human-centred design and Brisbane’s unique identity, which all help shape the communities in which we work, play and live.

John Ellway’s Terrarium House was awarded the Brisbane Regional House of the Year, thanks to the architect’s ingenious transformation of a 100-year-old cottage in Highgate Hill. Described as “a prototype for minimal modern habitation”, the design invites both public interaction and private retreat, while offering a flexible floor-plan and incorporating lush greenery. The John Dalton Award for Brisbane Regional Building of the Year went to Walan by bureau^proberts, a 14-storey residential development sitting on the edge of Brisbane River, adjacent to the Kangaroo Point cliffs. The regional-specific response to density issues is a contemporary take on the traditional Queenslander. Projects that received a Named Award or Commendation are now in the running for the 2019 Queensland State Architecture Awards, to be announced on Friday June 14 at Howard Smith Wharves.
