Local venues celebrated in 2019 Eat Drink Design Awards shortlist

While the nosh on the plate and the drop in the glass play vital roles, the setting is an often underestimated component of the overall dining experience. These annual awards are shining a spotlight on the importance of a well-designed venue.

The Eat Drink Design Awards have once again cherry-picked some of the most innovative spaces in the hospitality industry, ranging from fine-dining institutions and inner-city hotspots to regional watering holes and temporary pop-ups. This year’s best design awards span seven categories, from bar, restaurant and cafe to installation, identity, retail and hotel. The 2019 shortlist has now been announced, with some of our most beloved local venues making the cut.

The Best Restaurant Design shortlist saw Burleigh Pavilion by Alexander & CO., The Lord Lamington and Ichiban Sushi by Collectivus, Salt Meats Cheese by Control Space, Black Hide Steakhouse by Gambaro and Persone Bar and Restaurant by PLUS receiving accolades, while Snack Man by Nielsen Jenkins was shortlisted for Best Bar Design, and Marchetti 545 by Cameron & Co and Campos Gasworks by SP Studio made the list for Best Cafe Design. The Calile Hotel by Richards and Spence made the cut for Best Hotel Design, Polpetta by Toben for Best Identity Design and Grand Central Market Room by Hassell for Best Retail Design. The winners will be announced at a cocktail event hosted by chef and restaurateur Matt Moran in Melbourne on November 12.
