25 King set to be Brisbane’s (and Australia’s) tallest engineered timber building

One of the most innovative buildings to ascend in Brisbane’s inner city will be made predominantly out of timber. 25 King is set to boast ten levels made from revolutionary building materials and will be the largest engineered timber office building by gross floor area in the world.

News recently hit the wire of the forthcoming construction of 25 King, Lendlease’s newest office building that is making headlines thanks to its record-breaking construction. The building, at a height of almost 45 m, is set to be constructed largely from timber and will be situated on Fortitude Valley’s King Street near the Brisbane Showgrounds. Upon completion 25 King will include 7900 square metres of remaining office space (a portion has already been leased to Aurecon) with an interior that boasts stylish exposed-timber structures for a contemporary studio aesthetic, as well as large glass windows maximising natural light.

One might be thinking just how a timber building can possibly extend to such heights? The answer is in the materials – 25 King will be constructed from cross-laminated timber and glue-laminated timber, which boasts a structural strength similar to concrete and steel. Buildings made from such engineered timber give off a lower carbon footprint and the production process produces next to zero waste. Also of note, all timber has been sourced from sustainably managed forests and the development with be further reducing energy consumption through the use of sunshades. Construction of 25 King is slated for completion in late 2018.
