Mindful making – ceramics star Bonnie Hislop opens her California Lane boutique

When it comes to gifting, one-of-a-kind items are definitely the way to go. Something unique and crafted with care is something to be cherished, and Bonnie Hislop’s ceramics are highly covetable. The skilled ceramicist and workshop operator has just opened a new store in California Lane, stocking a selection of handcrafted wares that blur the lines between function and eye-catching art.

Since her very first paint-a-pot class at the tender age of eight, Bonnie Hislop has maintained a fierce love of ceramic art. This passion has seen Bonnie earn a name for herself with her own ceramics range and as the operator of numerous (and incredibly popular) workshops across town. The idea to open up a bricks-and-mortar store wasn’t initially on the cards, but when kindred spirit and bestie Alice Nightingale opened a boutique in California Lane, Bonnie fell in love with the lane’s welcoming atmosphere and the potential avenues having a stand-alone store could offer. Bonnie’s newly open space is one part boutique store and one part painting studio – a hideaway for creative types and the ceramics curious to dip their brush and paint a piece of their own.

The shelves in Bonnie’s store are stocked with a selection of hand-built and lavishly adorned pieces – each imbued with a joyful spirit and oodles of colour. Bonnie uses her studio days early in the week to craft new items, so customers can always expect new pieces to pop up week to week. Those keen to try painting something for themselves can sign up for a casual painting session, decorating a coffee cup on site before its fired and made available to pick up within two weeks. If you really want to get stuck in, Bonnie hosts weekly painting classes on Thursday evenings where attendees paint themed ceramic pieces fashioned by Bonnie herself. In the age of mass consumerism and wastage, ceramic pieces are not only an eye-catching option, but with a little bit of care can last years.

Bonnie Hislop’s store is now open. Head to her website to sign up for painting classes, or check out the Stumble Guide for opening hours.
