More details revealed for the anticipated Brisbane Metro light rail project

After announcing the project in 2016, Brisbane City Council has released more information regarding a proposed high frequency rapid transport network that would intersect the Brisbane CBD. Details regarding the Brisbane Metro network reveal location and capacity details that will see travel times and congestion cut significantly.

Following a city-wide engagement program, which saw 1500 Brisbane residents evaluate the proposed Brisbane Metro plans, the Brisbane City Council has updated the concept to an expanded offering, with commitments now in place to update existing busway infrastructure, while also introducing a fleet of 60 trackless, rubber-tyred Metro vehicles. Each vehicle can carry up to 150 passengers, and will boost the overall capacity of the busway network to 22,000 people per hour in peak times. The services will aim to alleviate peak hour congestion by providing high frequency arrivals every 90 seconds, while fixing bottlenecks at the Cultural Centre, Victoria Bridge and North Quay.

Brisbane Metro will reportedly service 18 stations along routes stretching a total of 21 kilometres across the inner city. The proposed routes will extend from the inner city to the suburbs, including a line from the Eight Mile Plains busway station to Roma Street, and another from the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital to the University of Queensland lakes. The routes will include 11 interchange locations and will complement the Cross River Rail project. Head to the Brisbane City Council website for completion estimates and more information.
