Tipped to form part of Kelvin Grove’s McCaskie Park, Brisbane’s first permanent outdoor cinema is coming about as part of Brisbane City Council’s plan to activate more green spaces outdoors. Although we’ve had the aforementioned seasonal cinemas, this development application puts forward plans for the first fixed structure of its kind in Brisbane. The proposed space sits between Kelvin Grove Road and QUT’s Creative Industries precinct and will feature a drop-down 2.7m by 5.4m screen, a stage and a speaker set-up all housed within a permanent shelter.

According to the supporting documentation, Brisbane City Council will be enlisting an external party to manage the outdoor cinema. Thanks to its location in a council-owned public park, the cinema will be freely accessible and free to attend – bonus! Potential uses include family movie events, short film screenings and twilight community festivals, as well as the potential to provide a low-cost venue for public performances across theatre and the arts.
