This George Street hotel is set to get a seriously lush makeover

George Street’s existing Great Southern Hotel is set to get a massive new lease on life, with a development application submitted for an extension that includes some seriously exciting additions. If you like the sound of rooftop dining, lush green courtyards and exciting street-art activations, you’ll want to watch this space.

The development application for the Great Southern Hotel makeover has been submitted by GMT Hotel Brisbane Pty Ltd and designed by Argo, an award-winning architecture firm based in Brisbane. The development is large and thorough, focusing on revitalising the existing space by introducing additional rooms, a fully landscaped atrium, a solar distributor and some exciting new retail. The plans also include a new interior rooftop restaurant exclusive to patrons of the hotel, plus a ground floor cafe fronting George Street that will be open to the public.

At the heart of the Great George Hotel extensions is the aforementioned atrium, a five-storey landscaped structure that will be loaded with tall and fast-growing species of plants. The rear and side boundaries of the development have also been offered up as a canvas for an urban art intervention, with the project team in charge of the development planning to engage an experienced and recognised street artist to make some magic.
