We know the folk at GOMA are a generous bunch, but Night Life takes this concept to another level – James Turrell’s permanent light installation is a public gift we can definitely get behind. In case you’re unfamiliar, James Turrell is the artistic mastermind behind a huge number of large-scale installations at prestigious institutions all over the world and even here in Australia – his Amarna installation at the Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart is a crowd favourite. Now Brisbane is home to a permanent piece of the action, thanks to the unveiling of Night Life on Friday July 13.
From sunset to midnight each day, Night Life illuminates the eastern and southern façades of GOMA with a shifting pattern of vibrant coloured light. As per his ethos, the installation has been designed to evoke thought and contemplation amongst its viewers – it is a chance for gallery goers and even passers-by to stop and reflect for a moment or two. The project also marks the realisation of head architects Kerry Clare, Lindsay Clare and James Jones’ original design intentions with the building, furthering the significance of the installation.
Night Life is a permanent fixture at GOMA – swing by any time after sunset to catch the installation in action.
