New developments on the way for a Kings Co-op retail precinct

It’s exciting times for the Ekka mecca as the Brisbane Showgrounds and its surrounds undergo a serious revitalisation. The latest announcement details a new plan for a creative community retail development called the Kings Co-op, which will transform King Street into bustling urban thoroughfare.

Lendlease and The Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland are continuing the extensive transformation of the Brisbane Showgrounds, announcing plans to add a new retail co-operative space to the thriving King Street precinct. As part of a three-stage regeneration project, existing architecture will be upgraded with reclaimed materials drawn from the old showground pavilions. This news follows on from the opening of Kingsgate, which has already added new eateries to the area.

You might be wondering, what actually is a co-operative? Let’s break it down – a co-op is a group of business that operate out of a shared space, taking equal responsibility for the management of the location. The Kings Co-op will boast a collective of four spaces that include food and beverage offerings, studio spaces for the creative types and a mixed-use section featuring childcare, and health and wellbeing facilities. Rockpool Dining Group will also be collaborating with Urban Craft Brewing Co. to revitalise the iconic Royal Snack Bar. The redevelopment is expected to be completed in July 2017, so be sure to keep an eye on The Weekend Edition for more information as it comes to light.
