Neville Bonner Bridge to connect South Bank and the future Queen’s Wharf precinct

Neville Bonner Bridge to connect South Bank and the future Queen’s Wharf precinct

Named in honour of Australia’s first Indigenous parliamentarian – the late Senator Neville Bonner AO – a new pedestrian bridge is set to link both sides of the Brisbane River.

While both Queen’s Wharf Brisbane and the Neville Bonner Bridge have come under criticism by community groups, Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones announced late last month that the contract to build the inner-city pedestrian bridge would soon be released. Approximately 100 labourers, engineers, designers and other workers will bring the bridge to life, with the next wave of labourers to be recruited after the tender is awarded. A concept image has also been released of the unique project designed by Grimshaw Architects.

Devised to connect the South Bank arts and cultural precinct with the future Queen’s Wharf Brisbane precinct, the bridge is part of the $3.6 billion development that will create more than 8000 jobs in Brisbane over the next decade. Senator Bonner was the first Indigenous person to sit in the Commonwealth parliament when he was appointed to fill a casual Senate vacancy for Queensland in 1971. He was popularly elected the following year and serviced until 1983. Bonner was a respected commentator on Indigenous issues and served on numerous Senate and Parliamentary Committees. In 1979, he was named Australian of the Year.
