Three local award-winning artists have been commissioned to create art installations and to build artwork into the structural design of a new residential development, Newstead Series. With 85 percent of stage one already sold, the boutique buildings are pushing the design envelope to deliver a residential development unique to the Newstead riverside precinct and the Brisbane market. Newstead Series’ design team – hand-picked by developer, JGL Properties – merges the talents of local artists to create a strong sense of identity and place through art and architecture.
Renowned timber artist, Jason Fitzgerald, has used local timbers to create an intricate and layered tapestry-style pattern, which serves as an inviting and opulent entrance to the boutique towers. Architectural firm, bureau^proberts, has created a striking sculptural brick facade at the base of the development, which is an interpretation of the strong edges that characterise Newstead as a suburb. Finally, artistic collective Rinzen, whose works have been exhibited at the Louvre, have created a large-scale abstracted graphic in the glazed sections of the development’s facade, which references the trusses and framing of the local warehouses.
Newstead Series comprises four boutique buildings – The Carlyle, The Donaldson, The Ajax and The Koerstz – which were named after Australia’s famous wool presses. Construction is set to kick-off in 2016.
