Pay it forward – One Another does good design, designed for good

There’s really no way around the fact that we are living in a consumer society. We love to shop and we love nice things – it’s okay. It’s very easy to go HAM and make it rain at your local Kmart or Target, but things get tricky when you think about the back-story of your $10 jumper and how it came to be. It’s well worth your while to seek out ethical companies that not only sell killer stock but also stick up for the people who make it. One Another is an amazing online store working hard to provide unique handmade goods crafted by disadvantaged women in developing countries, acting on the principle that behind every one of its products there is a person and a story.

The concept of One Another was born when partners Rick and Annette Carter were travelling through India with not-for-profit group Opportunity International Australia – the pair was inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit of local women they had met, and they wanted to make a tangible difference to these lives. One Another is a bridge between designer and manufacturer, providing a living wage and career opportunities to women in countries where this pretty much doesn’t exist otherwise.

The ranges at One Another are designed by Rick and Annette, then handcrafted by workers from collectives overseas in India, Nepal, South Africa, Uganda and Central America. All textiles are produced in either India or South Africa and each piece bears the signature of the embroiderer or weaver who made it, leaving a truly personal mark. All of the products are rooted in a modern classic aesthetic that focuses on texture, embracing the unique qualities of the handmade process. The range celebrates the traditional artisan skills of its markers but is laced with a modern touch and edge in its design. The latest One Another collection is all about simple colour blocking, diagonals and line work, meaning shoppers can easily layer and incorporate pieces into existing schemes.

One Another plans to eventually open a bricks and mortar store, but in the meantime you can shop the incredible range online.
