Howard Smith Wharves’ stunning Art Series Hotel, The Fantauzzo, opens its doors

You know the drill by now – as soon as we mention anything related to Howard Smith Wharves, it’s well worth sitting up and paying attention. Last year we dropped the news that the rapidly growing riverside hotspot was going to become home to a brand-new Art Series Hotel, named for celebrated contemporary artist Vincent Fantauzzo. Well, folks, the time has come to welcome these luxurious new digs to the neighbourhood – The Fantauzzo has officially opened its doors to its first guests as of yesterday, Tuesday March 26.

Joining the ranks of the acclaimed Art Series Hotels family as its eighth property, The Fantauzzo is a truly unique architectural and design feat in its own right. Carved into the cliff directly under the Story Bridge, the boutique hotel marries the principles of both built and natural environments, with a substantial dose of art to boot. The $100-million project spans six storeys and is made up of 166 lush suites, a rooftop pool and bar, a gym, state-of-the-art function facilities, plus relaxed Italian eatery Polpetta on the ground floor.

As for aesthetics and design, The Fantauzzo has been painstakingly curated to create a truly immersive artistic experience. Vincent’s award-winning work decorates the hotel in the form of six original artworks and more than 500 giclée prints, showcasing his famous photorealistic style across a range of inspiring subjects (we see you, Heath Ledger). Guests are welcome to enjoy complimentary art tours, in-room art channels and libraries that provide a more in-depth look at Vincent’s work. Design practice SJB has worked the hotel’s interior and exterior around Vincent’s style, creating a contrasting backdrop to his work through dark tones and muted finishes. Raw concrete with black glass and tiles create strong accents, while natural timber and rock pay homage to the hotel’s earthy exterior.

The Fantauzzo is open for business and taking bookings as of right now – to check dates and nab yourself a stay, head to the Art Series website.
