Hyde and Central style – Brisbane is set to gain its largest public park in 50 years

Brisbane has steadily built quite the reputation as a green city, and it seems that we’re not stopping with the current abundance of lush inner-city spaces to enjoy our amazing natural environment. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has announced plans with Brisbane City Council to turn the current site of the Victoria Park Golf Course into a massive public park. Following in the footsteps New York’s Central Park and London’s Hyde Park, the ambitious project will be the largest of its kind that our city has seen in more than 50 years.

According to a Facebook announcement linking to a piece in The Sunday Mail over the weekend, Cr Schrinner has revealed that the currently titled Victoria Park Vision project will sprawl across 45ha of Council land. Of this lot, 26ha currently houses the Victoria Park Golf Course and its adjoining facilities including a function centre, wedding venue, putt putt course and golf driving range. The golf course itself will be absorbed into the new park, while council are working with the current tenants to ensure its popular facilities will be incorporated into the park. The project will be second in size only to the existing Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens, and will come in at more than double the size of the City Botanic Gardens.

The future of the Victoria Park Vision space has some exciting inclusions on the horizon, with Cr Schrinner adamant that the community will have plenty of opportunities to provide input into how the area will be utilised. Current ideas for activations include pop-up cinemas, markets and even the likes of groundbreaking play areas for all ages. Work is already being undertaken to improve accessibility to the new park, with both lines of the upcoming Brisbane Metro set to transport patrons directly to the grounds via its Herston and Kelvin Grove stations. The upcoming council budget has allocated $1 million towards the start of the project, which will commence in 2021 and coincide with the permanent closure of the golf course.

This exciting announcement has not come with any further details yet – keep your eyes on The Weekend Edition for more updates as they come to light.
