Explore the road(s) less travelled with the best 4WD adventures in Queensland

With summer holidays just around the corner, we think it's time to pack up the car and start chasing sunsets. Sure, a classic roadtrip is a lot of fun, but it's hard to beat the thrill of turning your wheels off the beaten track to explore hidden gems and spots only discoverable with a bit of adventurous manoeuvring. If you're keen to go off-roading but don't know where to start, read on for some of our top spots to take yourself on a 4WD adventure in Queensland.

Moreton Island National Park
Those eager to jump in the car and explore outside the city this summer should add Moreton Island National Park to their 4WD adventure bucket list. With more than 420 km of unsealed tracks, it’s easy to see why Brisbane folk flock here on the weekends in search of a fun-filled escape. Curious explorers can discover the island’s many attractions including the Wrecks, Champagne Pools, Blue Lagoon and Honeymoon Bay, whilst those looking for a relaxed experience can bring along their fishing gear for some serene time spent on the water.

K’gari (Fraser Island)
A favourite of off-roading enthusiasts (the island is only accessible by 4WD), K’gari is renowned for its bounty of natural beauty. Spots that must be seen to be believed include 75 Mile Beach, Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek and the Maheno Shipwreck. Just remember –K’gari, being the world’s largest sand island, must be navigated by experienced 4WD users and you’ll also need to be mindful of the tides and slippery sand. Helping you tackle rough terrain, the GWM Ute features independent front suspension combined with heavy-duty rear lead suspension for heavy load carrying.

Great Sandy National Park
Located north of Noosa, Great Sandy National Park is a 4WD haven along the Great Beach Drive that connects the Sunshine Coast, Gympie region and K’gari (Fraser Island). This adventurer’s wonderland encompasses a treasure chest of picturesque natural splendour – from beaches and sweeping sand dunes to lush rainforests and freshwater lakes. Places not to be missed include the coloured sands of Rainbow Beach, the impressive moonscape of windblown sand at Carlo Sand Blow and the coastal charmer that is Teewah Beach. Remember to bring your swimmers!

Birdsville Track
Thinking about trekking a little (well, a lot) further out? Look, or rather drive, no further than the Birdsville Track in outback Queensland. This 517-km track is bested in a 4WD and while you don’t need a permit, it’s a lengthy ten-hour trip with only one fuel stop along the way. Therefore, you’ll need a reliable vehicle (hello, GWM Ute!) and your own fuel to get you through the journey. As you travel this iconic dirt road, you can expect to be rewarded with breathtaking sunsets, marvellous native wildlife and an abundance of watering holes perfect for taking a dip in.

Cape York
One of Australia’s most famous 4WD-only destinations is Cape York in Far North Queensland. With more than 1200 km of tracks and roads, this 4×4 haven is brimming with spectacular scenery – roads worth exploring include the Frenchmans Track (180 km) and Old Telegraph Track (350 km). Those who want to stay in comfort can stop off at one of the four campgrounds along this track, but bring your swag if you want to get away from the crowds and enjoy your own space under the stars.

Ready to hit the (off) road? Making it easier than ever to take the path less travelled is GWM, which has just introduced the GWM Ute so that drivers can enjoy the thrill of off-road adventures in Queensland.
