Beachside blues – classic Australian play Away gets a new life at La Boite

Any seasoned theatre-goer will be familiar with Australian playwright Michael Gow's seminal play, Away. First performed by Sydney's Griffin Theatre Company in 1986, this beachside holiday tale follows three very different families holidaying on the coast for Christmas in 1968. Fast forward to 2021 and the play is getting a fresh new look thanks to the drama-driven crew of La Boite Theatre. Coming to the Kelvin Grove hub from October 25 to November 13, Away is set to take theatre buffs' breath, well, away.

Thirty five years after it originally debuted on the stage, much-loved play Away has been envisioned for Brisbane audiences by director Daniel Evans (The Tragedy of King Richard III, Cinderella) and is coming in hot to La Boite Theatre this spring.

With a banger 60s soundtrack and an all-star cast including homegrown theatre luminaries Roxanne McDonald, Christen O’Leary and Bryan Probets, this sun-dappled show will take audiences on a nostalgic journey all the way to the Gold Coast’s glitter strip back in its prime. While you’re enjoying this sizzling showcase of drama, tuck in to one of La Boite’s pre-show food or VIP packages – because everything is made better with bites and bubbles, if you’re asking us.

Want a taste of some shoreside entertainment? Hop over here to book your tickets to the glamorous reimagining of Away.
