To be or not to be – Queensland Theatre’s Bernhardt/Hamlet mixes Shakespeare with the satirical

When it comes to the entertainment scene, Brisbane is making up for lost time. While the last couple of years have seen empty theatres and sad-looking stages, 2022 seems to be bursting at the seams with must-see theatre, glorious gigs and unmissable events. One show that's worth pencilling in your calendar is Bernhardt/Hamlet, a play coming to Queensland Theatre this autumn from May 28 to June 18. Imaginative, hilarious and hard hitting, this play is for both Shakespeare fans and those who are keen to enjoy a dose of immersive theatre.

Coming to the Bille Brown Theatre this May, Queensland Theatre’s Bernhardt/Hamlet is a mesmerising real-life backstage story by renowned American playwright Theresa Rebeck. The Broadway hit has played at theatres across the globe, capturing the hearts of audiences with its audacious story about a 19th century woman issuing a challenge to the system that is still as relevant today. Queensland Theatre artistic director Lee Lewis takes the helm as director in this rendition of the story with a top-tier cast of Aussie actors headed up by stage and screen star Angie Milliken (Death of a SalesmanPassengers).

Audiences will be transported all the way back to Paris in 1899 for this scintillating show, where star of the stage Sarah Bernhardt (Milliken) has set her sights on playing the role of Hamlet. Breaking the mould in more ways than one, the diva needs to do something spectacular (and controversial) to save her debt-ridden theatre. The solution? To take on the sacred role of the Prince of Denmark, and what transpires next will tickle the funny bone to say the least.

To grab a ticket or to grab two tickets? That is the question. Whatever the answer may be, you can secure your seat at Bernhardt/Hamlet on the Queensland Theatre website.
