Two star-crossed lovers from opposing families – it’s a tale as old as time. But one of Australia’s best young writers has penned a powerful stage play that flips the age-old story on its head. In Nakkiah Lui’s Black is the New White, Romeo is white and Juliet is black, and their families are entrenched in opposing ideological political groups. After selling out its world-premiere season at Sydney Theatre Company, the production comes north to kick off Queensland Theatre’s 2018 season at QPAC. Directed by Paige Rattray, designed by Renée Mulder and starring a cast of stellar Australian acting talent, Black is the New White is set to be a funny, poignant and triumphant tale of love persevering amidst the tumultuous and often-hypocritical Australian social and political landscape.
Itching to know how you can get your hands on a ten-clam ticket? Well, as part of Queensland Theatre’s youth movement and theatre education program, the company is offering tickets to patrons aged 30 and under at a reduced rate. Those within the age bracket who purchase early will be able to do so for a mere $10. It’s a good idea to act quickly as tickets are limited and will increase in value by $5 each week until the start of February. That means tickets will go up to $15 from Thursday January 11, $20 as of January 18 and $25 from January 25. Once the ticket price hits $30, that’s where it’ll stay for those 30 and under (they’re $41 for everyone else), which is still a great deal as far as we’re concerned. Tickets are available through the QPAC website, just make sure you bring valid ID with you on the night to ensure you can grab your passes at the box office.
