Over the past eight years the Brisbane Comedy Festival has managed to nab some seriously slick acts, so it comes as no surprise that the 2018 edition has upped the ante. Jim Gaffigan headlines the strong international showing, making his Brisbane debut ahead of his hotly anticipated Australian tour. The rest of the globe is well represented with the likes of Irishmen Jimeoin and Des Bishop, Canada’s own DeAnne Smith, plus English funnymen Stephen K Amos and Jeff Green celebrating 30 years on the comedy circuit with a special show. Rounding out the globetrotting affair are our beloved New Zealand neighbours Cal Wilson and Urzila Carlson, Scottish star Daniel Sloss and the USA’s Rich Hall making a long-awaited return to our shores.
On the more local front, there’s plenty of goodness and giggles on offer. The gents include names like Akmal, Wil Anderson, Dave Hughes, Joel Creasey, Lawrence Mooney, Matt Okine, Nazeem Hussain and Tom Gleeson, alongside comedy’s kick-ass queens Fiona O’Loughlin, Mel Buttle, Celia Pacquola, Becky Lucas, Gen Fricker and Zoë Coombs Marr. Don’t think that this bumper line-up is restricted to the stand-up comedy realm – audiences will be treated to brand-new sketches, parodies and improvisation of the craziest order. No topic is off limits, with everything from throat cancer to the queer experience being flipped from serious to seriously hilarious.
