Let’s break it down – we’re going to throw some Brisbane Festival numbers at you just to put the whole magnitude of the event into scope. The 23-day affair will bring together a tantalising mix of local, national and global talent across a staggering 454 performances of 83 shows – with a total cast of 908 artists. Amongst this exciting crop are some of the most exciting names in arts and culture around the world – tech wizards 59 Productions are taking on the unprecedented multi-artform Invisible Cities, Chinese superstar choreographer Yang Liping brings the groundbreaking Rites of Spring, plus two productions from South Africa’s lauded Isago Ensemble will be taking place.
There are even more exciting milestones and happenings in conjunction with Brisbane Festival this year. Large-scale installations will turn heads and shine a light on our city’s beauty and history – the searing Fire Gardens is set to take over the City Botanic Gardens while the water, light and laser spectacle River of Light illuminates hidden aspects of local Indigenous culture. Riverstage will also host four star-studded concerts to celebrate its 30th birthday, including a Brisbane-exclusive performance from City & Colour to close the festival. That’s not even close to all – we’re also lucky enough to get treated to world premieres from Dancenorth, La Boite and Queensland Theatre, as well as the red-hot new production from Strut & Fret’s BLANC DE BLANC crew.
