Paint the town – Brisbane Street Art Festival returns to reveal the city’s true colours

Ask anyone about the street-art scene in Australia and they will generally be quick to point a finger at Melbourne as our country’s capital of cool – but this is a frightfully incorrect assumption. Brisbane and its creatives have long been toiling away to make a name for our city as a major culture hub, thanks in large part to those who are dedicated to eradicating the stigma behind street art. Returning for its fourth year, Brisbane Street Art Festival is set to (literally) paint the town from May 4–19, bringing together a host of brilliant artists adding colour to the everyday.

Proudly sponsored by Brisbane City Council (in case you were scratching your head at the legality of it all), Brisbane Street Art Festival has collated some of the best artists to create a total of 46 commissioned artworks across The City and surrounding suburbs. BSAF has doubled in size since last year, thanks in large part to being backed by Council, the State Government, local businesses and academic institutions – proving that street art might have a bad rep, but at the end of the day it’s a beautiful thing to be celebrated and fostered.

It’s not just about painting walls – Brisbane Street Art Festival brings with it a whole program of accompanying goodness. From live music and panel talks through to workshops and exhibitions, the festival has something for every age bracket. Artists range from those grown in our own backyard like Sofles and Leans, right through to international heavy-hitters such as Argentine duo Medianeras and Colombian artist Zurik. The program also champions and celebrates both First Nations and female artists, including a large contingent of each across its talented line-up.

Folks, be sure to keep your eyes peeled and your gaze focused upward from May 4–19 when the Brisbane Street Art Festival takes over the town. For more details on events and locations, head to the BSAF website.
