From op-shoppers to sweet tooths – discover Brisbane’s best weekend cycling spots and trails

When it comes to places that boast a killer outdoor lifestyle, Brisbane is hard to beat. Our amazing climate, stunning riverside vistas and cool pockets of culture make it an ideal city to explore by bike – not to mention that ditching your car on occasion can really help the environment. If you’ve been seeking some inspo or motivation to get into cycling around our city, we’ve curated some easy bike trails based on specific areas of interest. Don’t have wheels of your own? No problem – the CityCycle network has got your back. With a whopping 150 stations boasting 2000 bikes between UQ St Lucia and Newstead, jumping on this program is a quick, easy and very affordable way to get around. Simply sign up to CityCycle and keep your journeys under 30 minutes to avoid usage fees.

The best of Brisbane
Playing tourist in your own city is a real treat, and one of the best ways to take in Brisbane’s beauty is via bicycle. This handy trail allows you to see some of our city’s most iconic sights all in the space of an afternoon. Start at the South Brisbane Station (Station 96) and make your way to the Queensland Museum and Sciencentre before popping over the South Bank to check out the Wheel of Brisbane and Streets Beach. When you’re done cooling off, ride across the Goodwill Bridge to the lush City Botanic Gardens, along the bustling Eagle Street Pier and make a pit stop at Howard Smith Wharves for a bite and a brew. Finish your journey with a leisurely peddle along the Riverwalk, then drop your CityCycle off at Station 72 at Powerhouse Park.

Second-hand treasures
Op-shopping is one of the coolest things you can do for both yourself and the planet – it’s sustainable, affordable and you get unique threads! This trail is for lovers of all things second-hand and thrifted. Start at Station 104 on Hardgrave Road in West End and hit up the St Veronica Thrift Shop first, then continue your West End trajectory with a stop at the Salvos Hope Op-shop. From there, pop across the William Jolly Bridge into The City and rummage through the goods at the CBD Lifeline shop. Peddle on to Fortitude Valley and check out the awesome selection at Suited To Success’ pre-loved fashion boutique, then follow it up with a trip to the famous RSPCA op-shop in New Farm. Need to dock your CityCycle? Station 74 is just across the road.

Sweet tooths
If you’re the sort of person who always has room for dessert, this delicious treat trail is the one for you – plus, cycling between these locations totally cancels out the calories. Pick up a CityCycle from Station 12 on Adelaide Street and make the quick journey to Noosa Chocolate Factory to stock up on provisions, then roll on to the iconic Pancake Manor on Charlotte Street for a buttery stack. Work off your feast by cycling over to South Bank, where a whole bounty of deliciousness awaits – we recommend dippin’ and dunkin’ some Spanish doughnuts at San Churro, then indulging in the epic menu of desserts at Max Brenner. Got room for one more? Of course you do – you ain’t a quitter! Finish your journey with a visit to West End haven La Macelleria Gelateria for an award-winning scoop, and then roll over to Station 109 on Montague Road.

Southside rollin’
They don’t call it the River City for nothing – lush parks, gentle breezes and convenient cycling paths make rolling on the river a no-brainer for both die-hard cyclists and two-wheel newbies. Start at Station 92 near the Thornton Street Ferry Terminal and pedal along Kangaroo Point Cliffs Park, taking in the amazing scenery before you hit Clem Jones Promenade. Carry along this path until you reach Kurilpa Point Park in South Brisbane, before carrying on to West End’s riverside spots. Follow the trails along Riverside Drive, West End Riverside Lands Park and then finish up at Orleigh Park for a rest under a fig tree. Those who need to dock their CityCycle can do so at Station 106 on Orleigh Street.

To the north
Fancy a roll around the northside? There are some great tracks and parks to check out if you’re into lush scenery and chill vibes. Start in The City at Station 20 near the Goodwill Bridge and follow the Bunya Walk around the City Botanic Gardens, then keep to the cycling path along the City Reach Boardwalk before making your way to the bustling Howard Smith Wharves. Keep the river vibes flowing by taking to the Brisbane River Walk, and then naturally progress north along the water to Merthyr Park, New Farm Park and Powerhouse Park. Finish up your journey with a pedal along the stretch between New Farm and the Teneriffe Boardwalk.
