Provocative live shows, Hamilton hype and pop-culture icons – the best events happening this February

Get set, folks – February is packed with a smorgasbord of events that'll leave your social calendar brimming with goodness. From Hamilton's must-see season to K-Pop dance parties and sexually progressive performances, here are five unmissable events happening across Brisbane and beyond this February.

ΩHM at Brisbane Powerhouse, February to March, various dates
A contender for becoming one of the city’s most talked about cultural experiences, Brisbane Powerhouse’s provocative festival ΩHM spotlights an immersive program of music and art, showcasing adventurous and profoundly personal approaches to sound, music and performance. Expect embodied experiences, audiovisual installations, newly developed works, international headliners, and trail-blazing national and local names. Legendary New Zealand rock band The Chills take the theatre stage on February 15, before feminist icon and pop provocateur Peaches brings a bold, sexually progressive, boundary-pushing performance on February 17. Synth-pop gems Future Islands are throwing an unmissable show on February 18, before widely acclaimed London-based poet, author and recording artist Kae Tempest takes the stage with a formidable body of work and a brand-new album to Brisbane for the very first time. ΩHM’s jam-packed February program sets the scene for a swag of unmissable shows in March – read more about what’s in store here.

Hamilton at QPAC, various dates
If you haven’t been yet, we strongly suggest you give into the hype and be in  ‘The Room Where It Happens’ by booking your tickets for Hamilton’s strictly limited season at QPAC’s Lyric Theatre. Coming in hot after its wild success in Sydney and Melbourne, the Tony®, Grammy®, Olivier and Pulitzer Prize winning musical has already garnered rave reviews from its first wave of Brisbane Shows. For the uninitiated, Hamilton takes the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton to create a revolutionary moment in theatre, featuring iconic scores that blend hip-hop, jazz and RnB with book, music and lyrics, all masterminded by Broadway superstar Lin-Manuel Miranda. Folks, Hamilton is in Brisbane for a good time, not a long time, so don’t ‘Wait for It’.

BrisAsia Festival, various dates
BrisAsia Festival has returned to inject a hefty dose of culture and fun across the city, with a show-stopping lineup of some of the best sights, sounds, tastes and experiences of Asia. The festival’s three-week program continues with a stacked series of events rolling out in February – so make sure you don’t miss a beat! Celebrate Asian pop-culture and watch Brisbane light up at the Summer Party at South Bank Pizza on February 10, then dust off the dancing shoes for BrisAsia Dance and the Aussie K-Poppers United shows, both on Saturday February 11. The family-friendly Southside By Night event on February 18 brings together Brisbane’s hottest cars, the city’s top artists and authentic street food, while Rare Voices will inspire music enthusiasts with an evening on local artistry by some of Brisbane’s best Asian singers.

Pop Masters: Art from the Mugrabi Collection, New York at HOTA, from February 18
Time to lock in your next Gold Coast visit – this world-first exhibition is well worth a trip down the M1 for. A collection of artworks never before seen on Australian shores will be showcased at HOTA on the Gold Coast as part of its blockbuster world-first exhibition, Pop Masters: Art from the Mugrabi Collection, New York. The exclusive exhibition, which will light up the HOTA Gallery from its premiere on February 18, is drawn entirely from the coveted private collection of Jose Mugrabi – one of the world’s most prominent art collectors. Spotlighting the enduring legacy and generation-defining culture of pop art, the exhibition presents more than 40 landmark pieces by iconic artists – headlined by a significant ten-piece showcase from pioneer Andy Warhol, alongside incredible works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and a cohort of famed artists that were inspired by the trio’s legacy. This, friends, is a must see! Tickets are available via the HOTA website. Hot tip – head to the gallery rooftop and grab a wagyu burger and cocktail from The Exhibitionist Bar while you’re at it.

Ed Sheeran, February 17, 18 & 19
Some of us are mega fans of Ed, some have walked down the aisle to his soul-hitting tunes, some just have a soft spot for his catchy bops and others prefer not to admit they have belted out some of his top hits in the shower more than once (we won’t tell). Whichever category you fall into, we can agree on one thing – the man can sing. Ed Sheeran and his spectacular pipes will hit Suncorp Stadium for three nights on February 17, 18 and 19– and tickets are still available. Keen for a night with Ed? Get your tickets through the Ticketek website while you can.
