Serenades under the stars and alluring art – Up Late returns to GOMA for Chiharu Shiota: The Soul Trembles

Calling all night owls! From August 26–27, GOMA is once again hosting a jam-packed line-up of nocturnal entertainment across two star-studded nights for its beloved Up Late series. When the sun dips below the horizon, avid culture seekers will be able to roam through the enchanting exhibition Chiharu Shiota: The Soul Trembles while being treated to some killer Australian acts and pop-up activities.

Up Late is returning to GOMA next month with two chock-a-block nights of live tunes, DJs, bars and themed pop-up experiences alongside the breathtaking large-scale installations of Chiharu Shiota: The Soul Trembles. The exciting evening events will further spotlight The Soul Trembles, which is the largest solo showcase of artist Chiharu Shiota’s work to date. The ‘gram-worthy exhibition highlights Chiharu Shiota’s practice across large-scale installations (you might of already seen the black and red threads pop up on your feed), sculptures, video performance, photography and drawing. On Friday August 26, Up Late will come to life with help from Melbourne funk icon Harvey Sutherland, Toowoomba-based First Nations artist Cloe Terare and DJ Red Belly.

Saturday August 27 see Melbourne’s Jen Cloher take to the stage, an intimate set from flowerkid, pop melodies from Beckah Amani, plus beats from DJ Scalymoth. Across both nights, visitors can drop in to whistle-wetting pop-up Tea for the Soul to share a cuppa with immersive experience designer Dr Sarah Winter. Visitors will also be able to explore the spellbinding exhibition The Soul Trembles to the sound of pop-up piano and strings performances by guitarist Joel Woods and pianist Thien Pham. Hungry for more? Those who work up an appetite can fill their bellies and sample luscious libations from GOMA Bistro, Newstead Brewing Coastal Bar, River Room Bar and Bacchus Wine Room.
