Queensland Ballet delivers a heady dose of fairytale magic with Cinderella

When you think about classic fairytales, it makes sense that they are so perfectly suited to the realm of ballet – the whimsy, beauty and fantasy of these timeless tales lend themselves so well to the genre. One of the world’s most beloved stories is coming to QPAC this September, when Queensland Ballet brings its stunning rendition of Cinderella to the stage.

The story of Cinderella is one of those classic tales that most people would at least be familiar with, if not a cherished childhood story. Though film and book adaptations are many, the true charm of the story really shines through when the story is told through dance – and nobody does it quite like the Queensland Ballet. The tale of a humble girl who never lost sight of her dreams even in the face of crushing reality is one that works beautifully with ballet, allowing the humour, sensitivity and magic of the narrative shine through.

Cinderella is making its return to the Queensland Ballet roster for the first time since 2013, when ballet legend Li Cunxin first took the reins as artistic director at the company. Audiences will be treated to Ben Stevenson’s sterling production made up of beautiful choreography combined with truly enchanting costumes and sets, not to mention the unmatched talents of the cast. Sergei Prokofiev’s joyful score is perfectly complemented by Tracy Grant Lord’s exquisite costumes and Thomas Boyd’s immaculate set design. There is a reason this production is an audience favourite, after all – a time-honoured story delivered with airtight precision and pure magic is pretty hard to beat.

Want to witness the magic for yourself? You can pick up tickets to Queensland Ballet’s Cinderella through QTIX.
