Campfires, craft, karaoke and kayaking combine when Death Valley Fun Camp returns for its third year

What do you get when you take all of the best things from school camp, minus the dodgy sloppy food and awkward guitar-playing PE teacher, and add tasty food and drink, killer music, fun workshops and a giant beach ball? You get Death Valley Fun Camp, that’s what. The brainchild of The Grates’ Patience Hodgson and John Patterson is back for another year promising to be more rad than ever … and The Weekend Edition is partnering with them to make someone’s weekend extra, extra special.

From midday on Saturday May 26 to midday Sunday May 27, you’re invited to disconnect yourself from the digital world and join in on some ol’ fashioned good times under the open sky. For the third year running, Death Valley Fun Camp is returning to Lake Moogerah School Camp Grounds, promising to cram a whole lot into 24 hours – you’d be surprised how much you can do when you’re not distracted by Instagram. The camp is the creation of Patience Hodgson and John Patterson (The Grates, Southside Tea Room, Death Valley), designed to be the festival for people who don’t like festivals, and the camp for people who don’t like camping.

Tickets to Death Valley Fun Camp include three meals of campfire cooking from Jacob Knauth of Lucky Egg, The Bucha of Byron kombucha and HRVST ST juice on tap, plus you can pay a little extra for a drink pass to get flowing beer and cider from Young Henry’s. There’s also a good-old-fashioned tuckshop on site for you to spend your hard-earned pocket money. Daytime will be filled with bulk outdoorsy fun times – think zip-lining, kayaking, slip ‘n’ slide, archery and a giant beach ball – plus crafting with tinsel queen Rachel Burke and pinata making with craft-based designer Kitiya Palaskas. Southside Tea Room and Death Valley will be sharing secrets of cupcake piping and barbecue rubs and injections, Dan from Maker Workshop will help you build an organic trashbot, you can write and recite a letter to your childhood self with comedian Michelle Janssen, and Plaster Fun House is bring out its haul of vintage moulds to paint.

The fun doesn’t stop there, pals. Before you rest your head in your cabin bunk or tent, you can discover a whole new world with Disney karaoke, dance like crazy at the Late Night Mess Hall Disco, or smash the pinata you made earlier. Night owls will be treated to midnight snacks, and you can also raid your welcome kit, which comes complete with a camp shirt, s’mores and more. As an added bonus, all profits from food and drink will be donated to Kids Helpline – there’s nothing like good times for a good cause.

Are you ready for the extra, extra special part? The Weekend Edition has partnered with Death Valley Fun Camp to offer two lucky campers the ultimate weekend away with one-of-a-kind glamping experience The Pop-Up Hotel! One lucky person will have the chance to win two all-inclusive tickets to Death Valley Fun Camp (that includes food, booze and all activities), plus the ultimate place to rest their heads when they are all tuckered out – The Pop-Up Hotel. The winner will be living their best life in a lush cloud-like bed swathed in luxe linens, with some snazzy grooming products to help them look like they’re not hanging out in the bush, locally made snacks to curb any midnight munchies and cool entertainment to keep them up past their bedtime. Subscribe to The Weekend Edition to be among the first to find out when the competition opens.

Tickets for Death Valley Fun Camp go on sale Thursday March 15 – head to our Event Guide for full details.
