Fresh from a mega-successful Melbourne season, Disney’s Aladdin is finally landing in Brisbane after months of hype down south. Based on the aforementioned Academy Award-winning animated film, Aladdin made its world premiere to serious critical acclaim on Broadway back in 2014 and quickly established itself as one of the biggest new blockbusters in recent years. It’s no wonder when you take a look at the team behind the magic – the show features music by Tony Award and eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Newsies, Sister Act), lyrics by two-time Oscar winner Howard Ashman (The Little Mermaid), three-time Tony Award and three-time Oscar winner Tim Rice (Evita, Aida) and four-time Tony Award nominee Chad Beguelin (The Wedding Singer), with a book by Beguelin, and is directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon). That’s some serious star power!
When it comes to plots, Disney’s Aladdin has all the right ingredients to seamlessly translate from film to stage. Aladdin’s journey takes audiences into an exotic world of daring adventure, classic comedy and timeless romance. The production’s full score includes the five timeless songs from the Academy Award-winning soundtrack and more written especially for the stage – so you will most certainly get your ‘A Whole New World’ singalong. The musical truly goes above and beyond in terms of pure spectacle for the stage, with the Australian production boasting a cast of 34 and a stunning 337 glittering costumes. The principal cast features Gareth Jacobs as Genie, Ainsley Melham as Aladdin, Hiba Elchikhe as Jasmine and Adam Murphy as Jafar.
