The Ekka is shaking things up for its 140th year, introducing some really cool initiatives as well as staying true to its roots as Queensland’s longest-running major event (seriously, the only thing that’s stopped it have been the Spanish influenza and World War II). This year, the powers that be have introduced the very rad Twilight Ticket, which gets you through the gates from 6:00 pm until late for half the price of regular entry. Another fresh addition sees an earlier fireworks show taking place as well as the usual nightly display in the main arena where all of the EkkaNITES action goes down. You will still find all of the thrilling rides, nostalgia-laden showbags, adorable animals and non-stop events of previous years, plus loads of brand-new surprises both during the day and when the sun goes down.
Let’s cut to the chase and the real reason why most adults front up to The Ekka – the food. Whilst there is absolutely nothing wrong with a cheeky dagwood dog and strawberry sundae combo (nobody likes a snob), there is actually a massive range of culinary options on offer in the show’s dedicated food precincts. The massive Woolworths Fresh Food Pavillion boasts roughly 70 stalls brimming with fresh and delicious local produce, you can feast on international cuisine at Gourmet Plaza and sink your teeth into some mouth-watering meat at the Royal Queensland Steakhouse. You don’t have to swoop in for the early bird special either, because for the first time the precincts will be staying open late. Huzzah!
