Dancing in the dark and sun-soaked yoga sessions – five ways to get active this spring

With summer coming up, now more than ever is prime time to get into a regular fitness regime. No matter if you're a gym junkie, beginner exerciser or a couple-of-times-a-week active person, working out is made easier when it's fun. Before you fork out on pricey exercise classes, we think you should take advantage of the Medibank Feel Good Program. Back for another two-month stint from October 4 to December 4, these free outdoor classes are the perfect way to soak up the spring weather and get fit as a fiddle while you're at it. Here's some of our personal favourite sweat sessions to take part in ...

Yoga
A recurring fixture of the Medibank Feel Good Program, yoga is beloved for its many physical benefits – from improving strength, balance and flexibility to even helping with back pain. But perhaps what is the most compelling advantage of this workout is that it’s also good for your mental health. The practise incorporates breathing exercises, meditation and poses designed to encourage relaxation and reduce stress. So if you have a bad case of the Mondays, this is one class worth booking into.

Ballroom Dancing
Sure, we’ve all torn it up on a dance floor in The Valley before (probably – and embarrassingly – too many times to count), but who among us can say that they know how to ballroom dance? We bet very few. From the wizardry of the waltz to the flirtatious way of the foxtrot, ballroom dancing is easier to learn than you think – even for people with two left feet. Plus, it makes for a good party trick to pull out. Cue some Frank Sinatra and quickstep to it.

Aqua
With the mercury rising, our desire to plunge into a pool is becoming stronger each day. Thankfully, aqua aerobics is on the cards thanks to the Medibank Feel Good Program. These classes are a great way to mix up your workout regime with the benefits of water, with the classes helping you to build strength whilst putting less stress on your joints and muscles. Plus, you have the added benefit of keeping cool in the water – a win-win workout, if you’re asking us.

Zumba®
Beloved by fitness fanatics across the world, Zumba® is a fun and effective full-body workout. This session is perfect for people who want to burn some calories and tone up – it’s said that you burn between 300-900 calories during one hour of mid- to high-intensity Zumba®. Plus, it’s pretty hard to think of it as a workout as you have so much fun dancing, that you forget you’re actually exercising!

Mums & Bubs
Mamas can get in on the athletic action with a Mums & Bubs exercise class, which helps parents get back to pre-baby fitness with a dynamic combination of cardio and toning exercises. The best part? These workouts are designed to suit all ranges of fitness levels, so you can take each session at your own pace.

Medibank Feel Good Program classes are held at various locations around South Bank (and a couple of cheeky spots in The City), so all you have to do is suss the timetable and show up at a class that tickles your fancy. Ready to get your sweat on? You can check out the full Medibank Feel Good Program timetable here.
