The round-up: winter fitness ideas worth leaving the house for

Now that the mercury is dropping and we’re pulling out our jumpers, the motivation to extract ourselves from the comfort of the couch in favour of exercise is running low. Instead of hibernation, we have a better suggestion – free and low-cost ways to stay fit and keep warm this winter. With the help of Brisbane City Council, we’re going to help you get off the treadmill and into some more fun fitness practises no matter what your exercise style is.

Lap it up
The thought of diving into a pool in winter might not sound all that appealing, but hear us out – 12 of Brisbane’s 22 public pools are heated and ready to use all winter long. Spots like the Newmarket Olympic Swimming Pool, Chermside Aquatic Centre, Emily Seebohm Aquatic Centre and more stay nice and toasty throughout the chillier months, so you can still jump in for laps any time without worrying about the cold.

Wheely good fitness
For a workout that combines adrenaline and sweat, the wheeled variety is probably right up your alley. Whether you’re into boarding, blading or even scooting, Council has a heap of rad skate parks to hit up – and everyone is welcome. Ashgrove, Keperra and Balmoral have recently gained brand-new facilities if you’re after something fresh, but you can head to any of the total 37 parks to get your sweat on. Psst … there are also 20 killer BMX parks handy if you prefer your action on two wheels. Bracken Ridge BMX track is one of the largest in Australia and the new facility at Darra will keep you entertained for hours.

Get outside
Sick of paying for a gym membership? Cut it out right now – our city is home to more than 130 outdoor gyms that you can take advantage of whenever you please (and without spending a cent). Look out for the outdoor equipment and rediscover your muscles with chin-ups, crunches, step-ups and loads more. Check out this map to find spots near you where you can score a free workout.

Send help
We can’t all be self-motivated fitness fiends, so why not take advantage of people who are willing to help you out? There is a plethora of free and low-cost classes to participate in all over the city – from chilled-out yoga sessions to more high-intensity stuff like boxing and cardio, there’s something for everybody (and every body). If you’ve been trying to get your nan or pop out of the house, there are also a huge range of seniors options available – hello, tai chi!

Tee off
If you’re after a low-key way to maintain your health without going too hard, golf is where it’s at – provided you ditch the buggy, of course. Get swinging at Council’s St Lucia and Victoria Park golf courses, each of which offer affordable options and have no membership fees. For example, Vic Park’s cheap Tuesdays are a hidden gem you should take notice of – just $16.50 will get you a full round of 18 holes. The putt-putt course is also a great way to get the fam together – and encourage some healthy competition, of course.

This is just a small chunk of the best ways to keep fit and warm this winter – to read more about everything there is to see and do in Brisbane to keep you feelin’ good, check out the Council website.
