Celebrate a decade of making Brisbane beautiful as GOMA Turns 10

Celebrating a decade of operation is a pretty big deal for most places – you might grab a cake, pop some bottles and invite a few of your nearest and dearest around to herald the milestone, right? Well, the Gallery of Modern Art is doing things a little differently – Saturday December 3 marks ten glorious years of the internationally acclaimed space making Brisbane all the more beautiful, and it’s coming in hot with the festivities. From eye-popping exhibitions to dancing horses, there are celebrations aplenty as GOMA Turns 10.

It wouldn’t be a birthday without a party, and that’s exactly how GOMA Turns 10 is opening its jam-packed weekend on Friday December 2 – think live DJs, amazing art adorning the walls (obviously) and a few drinks for good measure. The opening weekend that follows is filled with everything from panel discussions to artist workshops, giving people the chance to fully immerse themselves in the art world. A particular highlight is the first ever performance of artist Nick Cave’s phenomenal HEARD●Brisbane, where bright and bold fringed horse sculptures come to life with the help of talented dancers. As a present to itself (and its patrons, of course), GOMA will also be unveiling a brand-new public artwork by Queensland Indigenous artist Judy Watson. Excitement levels are peaking!

The excitement of GOMA’s birthday will carry on long into 2017, with a number of free exhibitions taking place in the gallery for people to feast their eyes upon. The lush and plush Sugar Spin: you, me, art and everything features all sorts of interactive exhibits, including a giant slide and a live finch installation just to name a couple. Many have been eagerly awaiting the reveal of the second chapter of A World View: The Tim Fairfax Gift and they won’t be disappointed – it features a stunning new light work by Anthony McCall amongst many other treasures. Lucent highlights works from the Aboriginal and Pacific collections, exploring connections and differences between the cultures.

Almost everything on offer over the opening weekend is free, but to check for ticketed events just head to the GOMA website.
