The Good Room takes it to the streets with two ephemeral art activations

In the words of one Ferris Bueller, life moves pretty fast. We’re living in a time in history where we have so much access to information and the world around us, yet we are becoming increasingly disconnected. There seems to be precious little that can drag us away from our screens and into the moment – heck, how many times have you been ploughed into by someone who was text-walking? It really pays to take a moment to stop, look around and think – you might be surprised by what you see. This is the premise of a brand-new project from groundbreaking contemporary collective The Good Room, which sees Jacob’s Ladder and the Metro Arts laneway come alive with world-class art pop-ups that provide much more than just something awesome to look at.

The first installation from The Good Room will run from July 19–22, where a series of 40 printed flags will fly from the iconic Jacob’s Ladder staircase in a piece called Brave New Worlds. For this activation, artists were tasked with designing a flag for the world they would like to live in – offering a visual representation of their utopia. Brave New Worlds is a joint effort between 20 of Brisbane’s best and most exciting visual artists. Some noteworthy names include Churchie Award finalist Courtney Coombs, Perth Institute of Contemporary Art’s national Hatched award finalist Naomi Blacklock, and two-time Archibald Prize finalist Sam Cranstoun.

The next activation comes a week later on Friday July 28 for one day only, taking over the Metro Arts Laneway as These Frozen Moments. This breathtaking installation showcases the talents of more than 20 local authors, poets and spoken-word artists in the form of an audio installation. Visitors will enter the heritage-listed laneway lined with suspended origami sculptures, each concealing a speaker that whispers an individual moment of a possible world. The voices combine as an installation of cascading whispers, creating a sensory feast. Short stories, poems and monologues are shared at a volume that really makes the listener pay attention – amongst these voices you will hear local playwright Aleea Monsour, novelist Victoria Carless and writer Regan Lynch just to name a few.

To see the work of some of Brisbane’s finest artists unleashed on the streets, head along to Jacob’s Ladder from July 19–22 and the Metro Arts laneway on Friday July 28.
