Who run the world? Where to celebrate International Women’s Day in Brisbane

Folks, here’s a little heads up – International Women’s Day has rolled around again! Taking place on Friday March 8, this global celebration shines a light on the amazing work that non-male folk all around the world are doing. From art and activism to STEM and parenting, it’s all about acknowledging the tireless work of women in all walks of life. This day is for everyone (no matter how they identify) to celebrate, support and recognise the achievements and everyday struggles that women face. We’ve rounded up some rad events that epitomise the spirit of the day – and all are welcome to attend.

Not-so-secret Women’s Business: If you’re looking to throw your support behind local female artists, makers and entrepreneurs this International Women’s Day, this is the place to do it. Held at Atticus Finch, this mini-market is bringing together a curated selection of female-fronted businesses to sell their wares – from jewellery and accessories through to visual art and even adorable dog clothes.

Ho’made:
Chasing a Friday night knock-off drinks event with a difference? Ho’made has got you more than covered. Taking place at Betty’s Espresso & Bar, this all-in event is a mammoth celebration of local lady talent in all its forms. The event includes an art exhibition, live music and performance art, as well as stalls selling a selection of exclusive and adorable handmade goodies from Brisbane’s amazing female creatives.

APT9 tour at QAGOMA:
Did you know that QAGOMA’s amazing APT9 exhibition actually features a majority of female artists? International Women’s Day is a perfect time to shine a light on this impressive feat of representation, so GOMA is celebrating by holding a special tour lead by curators that highlights women artists in APT9. Get a closer look at some of the artwork – and the women behind it – that have made the exhibition so rich and exciting.

The F Word – A Celebration of Female Artists:
Want to see some beautiful art and throw your support behind a great cause at the same time? The Print Bar is hosting The F Word, an exhibition showcasing a killer selection of more than 20 kickass female creatives across a range of disciplines. Rolls Pho Mi, Young Henrys and Sirromet Wines will be on hand to keep you fed and watered, with funds raised on the night going to Women’s House and its incredible work providing support and counselling for women who have experienced sexual violence.

Girl Bands in The Lanes: If you want some girl-boss inspiration, you need look no further than The Lanes in Fortitude Valley. These bustling hives of activity are home to some of our favourite businesses – and women own more than half of these shops. Hell yeah! To celebrate its girl gang, The Lanes is hosting free live music from female-fronted bands on Friday afternoon – take in some tunes and support local creatives.

So, Which Band Is Your Boyfriend In?: Ah, the age-old question that gets asked of so many non-male people in the music scene. It’s also the name of a rad documentary female, trans and gender non-binary musicians, engineers and producers in the UK punk music scene – and you can catch the Australian premiere! Following the screening there will be a panel and Q&A session featuring non-male guests talking about the music scene, as well as a cash donation bar and mini zine market. Funds raised from the event will be going towards the amazing Girls Rock BNE, a community that empowers female, trans and gender non-binary youth to get creative through music.

Bloom: When it comes to the fight for equality, both the music and art worlds are seriously lagging with female representation – but the tide is turning, slowly but surely. Bloom is an exhibition taking place at Netherworld on Thursday March 7, celebrating female identifying artists of Brisbane. You can catch works curated by Brisbane dynamo Shani Finch, as well as live tunes in the arcade room. Two Birds Brewing is putting on a karma keg for the night, and 10 percent of art sales will be going towards the amazing efforts of Zig Zag Young Women’s Resource Centre.

The Regatta’s Breakfast Fundraiser: For International Women’s Day, the Regatta Hotel and Project Pink are combining food and education to create an event to remember. Enjoy a wholesome and healthy breakfast in The Boatshed, running alongside medical checks from the PA Research Foundation – think BMI and blood glucose testing, breast screen information, a session on mammography led by a breast cancer researcher and general health information. Proceeds from ticket sales will go to the legends at the PA Research Foundation.

Stronger Together: IWD isn’t just about supporting women – it’s a great opportunity to look deeper and to celebrate cultural diversity in our community. Stronger Together is an awesome event being held by the Queensland Afghan Community Association (QACA) and Iranian Society of Queensland to celebrate women from diverse cultural backgrounds coming together, sharing their stories and learning from one another. There will be an art exhibition, stalls from female local business, a panel discussion, cultural performances and a full buffet dinner by Saffron Restaurant.

ShelterHer Annual Cocktail Party: Dining and drinking for a great cause is something we can totally get behind, and the ShelterHer annual cocktail party at Blackbird Bar & Restaurant is a great event that encompasses this. Settle in for a luxe and leisurely afternoon of tipples, canapes and raffles, all held in support of the Lady Musgrave Trust – Queensland’s oldest charity that provides accommodation and support services to homeless women and children.

International Women’s Day at the Jubilee Hotel: A Friday night out for a great cause is always a nice time, and the Jubilee Hotel’s IWD event has all bases covered. The two-hour package includes flowing beverages, canapes and live entertainment, as well as a rad raffle with prizes from Brooklyn Beauty Bar and Bacardi. All proceeds from the raffle will go to White Ribbon Australia, and the venue will be accepting business clothing donations to assist disadvantaged women looking for work.

Moonlight Cinema – On the Basis of Sex screening: Chasing a bit of girl-power inspo? They don’t come much more empowering than Ruth Bader Ginsberg, famous US Supreme Court judge and tireless gender equality activist. Her incredible true story has been made into the much-celebrated movie On the Basis of Sex, which you can catch at the Moonlight Cinema on Friday March 8.
