La Boite unleashes old favourites and new classics for its explosive 2019 season

Let’s be honest – when a company has been a driving force in the arts game for 94 years, there is a high chance that it’s doing something right. In the case of La Boite Theatre, you can’t argue the cultural impact that the Brisbane-based company has had on our whole country. Over its long history of taking risks, fostering emerging talent and keeping things relevant, La Boite has gotten pretty bloody good at finding out what makes people tick. As we approach 2019 at a breakneck pace, it has become clear that the iconic theatre company has once again cooked up a killer season – including a a classic reimagined, a triumphant return performance and a brand-new comedy.

La Boite Theatre’s 2019 season is off to a strong start with the return of homegrown hero Michelle Law’s hilarious Single Asian Female, featuring the original cast reprising their roles in the smash-hit comedy. Next up is another killer collaboration between La Boite and QUT, serving up a contemporary reimagining of the time-honoured Romeo & Juliet. September brings Brisbane Festival, and with it comes the world premiere of comedian Stephen Oliver’s fierce and funny From Darkness. This gem was born from 2018’s La Boite HWY program, which has spawned some serious hits over the years (looking at you, Prize Fighter). The Main Stage season is rounded out with the fabulously festive Christmas Actually, bringing the beloved songstress Naomi Price to the stage in a cabaret-style holiday hit parade.

Joining La Boite’s 2019 season are three boutique theatre experiences set to stun and delight. The previously mentioned La Boite HWY program returns in a spectacular fashion to unearth some of the next great plays of our generation – just last year it gifted us with The Mathematics of Longing and we can’t wait to see what comes next! As part of the 2019 offering, audiences can also catch shake & stir’s multi-Helpmann Award nominated all-ages hit Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes & Dirty Beasts, returning as part of a national tour. The 2019 season is tied up splendidly with a truly unique concept in the form of Jeffrey Tan’s Open Homes. The theatre experience created by Singapore-based, QUT-trained theatre maker invites audiences into the lives and houses of Brisbane residents via personal stories, histories and anecdotes.

Can’t wait to sink your teeth into the action? La Boite 2019 season passes are on sale right now – snap one up here. If you’re chasing individual tickets, they will be released on November 19.
