Watch love flourish and fall apart in cult musical The Last Five Years

Love is a tricky old thing, eh? When you’re on the right track with someone else you can feel totally invincible, but having your heart truly broken is probably one of the most traumatic things you can experience as a human. Like it or not, love and life happen simultaneously – and often they get in the way of each other. That being said, lost love is something we can all relate to. Cult musical The Last Five Years is coming to the Brisbane Powerhouse from October 7–14 to give us an all-singing arrow to the heart, following the timeline of a disintegrating relationship from start to finish with no holds barred.

Stories that come from real-life experience tend to break hearts just a little bit more, which is a huge part of what makes The Last Five Years such a bittersweet pill to swallow. Based on the relationship of playwright Jason Robert Brown, the play follows the relationship of young couple Jamie and Cathy from the giddy beginning to the harsh end. Each tells the story from opposite chronological timelines, with struggling actress Cathy’s narrative beginning at the end and rising novelist Jamie’s tale told right from the start.

The home-grown production of The Last Five Years has some seriously talented people on board to carry it. The two leads have been given to Australian musical theatre heavyweights – Dirty Dancing’s Kurt Phelan steps up as Jamie, while Lizzie Moore of Kiss Me, Kate fame comes into the role of Cathy. The talent and experience of the pair make the overall experience all the more enthralling, guided by the brilliance of director and Wax Lyrical Theatre wizard Zoë Tuffin.

Ready to feel all of the things? You can grab tickets to The Last Five Years through Brisbane Powerhouse right now.
