Lights on, camera, action – Brisbane Powerhouse is back with a series of seriously intimate shows

With its reputation as Brisbane's creative, art and cultural hub with a flair for dramatics, we always knew the reopening of Brisbane Powerhouse would be something to look forward to. Ushering in the return of the contemporary art haven and its hugely popular creative calendar is Lights On – a curated series of intimate shows that feature new works from uber-talented Brisbane-based artists emerging from lockdown.

Kicking off the reopening of Brisbane Powerhouse with a bang, Lights On is a limited season of intimate performances created for small audiences. When we say intimate, we mean it – bookings to these limited-edition events are for tables of two, four or six, with a total of 35 tables per performance. Commencing the bespoke set of shows is Songs From Your Shutdown, which will take over the Powerhouse across two magical nights on Friday August 14 and Saturday August 15. Hosted by The Go-Betweens member and singer-songwriter Robert Forster, the special post-isolation event will also feature the likes of folk singer-songwriter Darren Hanlon, psychedelic-pop princess Sycco and indie-rock group Minor Premiers, who will share their stories and songs created during lockdown. Presented with QMusic, the rhythmic-filled show will be a very personal night of self-isolation storytelling with some of Queensland most beloved artists.

In a very unexpected partnership, Lights On will also see world-renowned beatboxer and electronic music composer Tom Thum link up with the string sensations of Queensland Symphony Orchestra on Friday August 21 and Saturday August 22 for two nights of musical excellence. Concert-goers can expect a fine-tuned night where jazz, hip-hop and experimental beats combine to create some seriously good sounds. To make the most of your evening, order a cabaret platter with a bottle of bubbles to tuck into during the performance or book a table at Bar Alto for some pre-show tipples and tapas.

Want to experience live music again with all of its head-bopping and toe-tapping goodness? Head to the Brisbane Powerhouse website to purchase your tickets. Be quick though, like the other previously announced Lights On shows featuring the likes of Circa, Queensland Ballet and Club Briefs, these are sure to sell out in lightning speed!
