Taking the annual competition to the streets (quite literally), the 2020 Lord Mayor’s Photographic Awards theme is ‘Suburban Life’ and invites photographers to capture and share images that showcase what’s special about their postcode. With now, more than ever, being a ripe time to document our stay-at-home routines and activities (see the ever-popular View From My Window Facebook page, for example), the awards are an opportunity to capture how life has changed (but also strangely stayed the same) at home in Brisbane’s suburbia. Whether it be scenic city views, cute wildlife roaming in your backyard, your pet taking advantage of your working-from-home situation or something eye-catching you spotted on your morning walk, there’s plenty to be captured through a new lens this year.
The awards, which are now in their eighth year, are open to anyone who lives, works or studies in Brisbane – whether you consider your skills amateur or professional level. There are seven categories that you can enter into – as well as several different cash prizes to be won – including the new environmentally focused Green Heart category (with a first prize of $1500), the Open category (with the winner taking $5000, the first runner-up $2000 and the second runner-up $1000), and the Student category (with a prize of $1500). There’s also the People’s Choice category, which is decided by a public vote ($1500) and the Social Media category ($1500), which counts entries that have been submitted through Instagram using the hashtag #LMPA2020. Altogether, there is a whopping total of $14,000 in cash prizes up for grabs – so there’s no harm in entering a few recently shot pics (as long as they have been taken after September 2019). Fun fact – last year’s awards saw Brisbane City Council receive more than 1100 Instagram entries, 1245 website entries and hundreds of votes in the People’s Choice category. Entries for the Lord Mayor’s Photographic Awards are open now until Wednesday August 5 and voting for the People’s Choice award is open from Wednesday September 2 to Wednesday September 30.
