Yasss kweens! King Street celebrates equality with three weeks of festive fun

Last year marked a pretty momentous occasion in Australian history – our (frankly useless) government asked us if same-sex couples should be allowed to marry, and because we’re not a pack of animals we voted yes to love. This rainbow-coloured victory is something to be celebrated, which is why the legends at King Street have decided to throw a three-week-long party in conjunction with Brisbane Festival. Love is King will take over the street from September 8–29 bringing fun, feasting and loads of amorous activities with it.

Held in the electorate that polled the highest ‘yes’ vote in Queensland, Love is King will be painting the town pink in honour of equality. The activation kicks off with a bang on Saturday September 8 with Qweens on King, where eight fabulous couples from the LGBTQI+ community will tie the knot in front of thousands of esteemed guests (like you, of course). A string of sweet entertainment will follow, including a performance by real-life angel Katie Noonan. Once the ceremony wraps up, it’s party time – and you’d best believe it’s a doozy. The reception will take place in the form of Heaps Gay Trash Palace at The Tivoli – think drag queens, queer performers and loads of debauchery.

The celebrations don’t stop here – Love is King is bringing some seriously delicious food deals to the precinct. Blush-hued treats like free pink tzatziki from The Lamb Shop and cotton candy milkshakes from Super Combo will have you feeling all giggly, as well as heart-shaped treats from Il Verde and Sushi & Nori. The George Bar & Bistro is also getting in on the action with rainbow muffins, while Bavarian Beerhaus is hosting a free lolly bar for one night only on Saturday September 8. Another cute non-edible retail offer includes 15-percent off at Salon Blend’s Lip Lab – we’d recommend creating a nice pink or red, obviously.

Love is King will be running from September 8–29 – to keep up to date with what’s happening and to see the full range of offers, be sure to follow the official Facebook event.
