Written as a bold and powerful response to Aristophanes’ Greek comedy Lysistrata, Lysa and the Freeborn Dames is a perfect 21st century serenade to the powerful global shifts taking place as we speak. Based around the time of the aforementioned human Cheeto’s rise to power, the play is centred around nineteen-year-old Lysa King. After spending a year in the big smoke and witnessing women’s marches and the #metoo movement, she returns home to discover that her tiny hometown seems to have missed the memo. She takes matters into her own hands and organises a massive protest on the biggest night of the year … but only three of her mates and a plucky young policewoman come along for the ride. Trapped in the local footy club, Lysa faces a choice – can she be the one to make a change when it could cut some of her closest ties in the process?
It’s not just a killer storyline that has Lysa and the Freeborn Dames getting people all kinds of excited – the minds behind the show are seriously impressive. The production is a continuation of La Boite’s unique collaboration with QUT Creative Industries, which saw Nick Enright’s powerful Blackrock take the stage last year. Six QUT Bachelor of Fine Arts students will make their stage debuts alongside legends Barbara Lowing, Roxanne McDonald, Hsiao-Ling Tang and Hugh Parker. The team is helmed by the expert directorial skills of Sanja Simić, who brings Claire’s powerful words to live with grace, hilarity and poignancy.
