No need to take a chance – Mamma Mia! the musical is a sure bet

Whether you love it or loathe it, the fact that ABBA is one of the world’s most enduring musical acts is undeniable. From sold-out halls to shopping malls and everywhere in between, the songs of the Swedish super troopers are bloody well everywhere – despite the fact that the group was at its peak back in the 70s. It makes sense that a stage musical based on the songs of ABBA would go absolutely gangbusters on account of it has all of the building blocks to be a hit – romance, heartbreak, pure joy and more than a dash of drama. The global phenomenon that is Mamma Mia! the musical is headed back to Brisbane, sweeping QPAC in a wave of pure pop brilliance from December 26 for a strictly limited season.

If you’ve never seen the magic of Mamma Mia! on stage (or have skipped seeing the movie adaptation with our lord and saviour Meryl Streep), allow us to fill you in on the basics. Set on a Greek island paradise and with a narrative inspired by the story-telling magic of ABBA’s timeless tunes, writer Catherine Johnson’s feel-good tale revolves around a young bride-to-be on the eve of her wedding. Her quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago, and naturally a whole lot of hilarity and heartbreak ensues.

The Mamma Mia! cast is coming in red hot, with a strong showing of homegrown talent bringing the iconic story to life on stage. The cast is lead by the phenomenal Natalie O’Donnell as Donna, in a full-circle move from her turn as Sophie in the original Australian casting of the play back in 2001. She is joined by breakout star Sarah Morrison (Ladies in Black) as Sophie, Offspring’s Alicia Gardiner and The Rocky Horror Show’s Jayde Westaby as the dynamic duo Rosie and Tanya respectively, Ian StenlakeJosef Ber and Phillip Lowe as the possible fathers to the bride-to-be and Stephen Mahy as Sky. Helpmann Award winner Gary Young directs the brand-new Australian production, with a stellar creative team at the helm making sure that there won’t be a dry seat in the house.

Ready to take a chance on love? You can grab tickets to Mamma Mia! through QPAC. Gimme, gimme, gimme!
