For such a short history, the Maroochy Music & Visual Arts Festival (MMVAF) has already made some huge waves in the Aussie festival circuit. The collapse of some of our country’s biggest major offerings (RIP Big Day Out, Soundwave, Harvest, etc.) has seen MMVAF step up to the plate with something entirely fresh, taking a more refined and artistic approach to the festival experience without skimping on quality. Big name acts such as The Presets and Alison Wonderland are making long-awaited returns to the touring circuit, while bona fide legend Bernard Fanning has let slip this appearance could be his last in a long time. Another serious benefit of the MMVAF model is that all acts appear on the same stage – think more of the good stuff and less agonising over whether to catch Gang of Youths or Skegss.
Aside from a killer musical offering, the Maroochy Music & Visual Arts Festival has curated an all-round experience to make the one-day affair something to remember. You may think you can hang at the stage for 12 hours (hey, power to you if you can) but most mere mortals will be down for a break at some point. The world-class visual artist line-up features Sunshine Coast artist Lucas Salton, a collaboration between Design Lab and Tiamco, as well as international top gun Beastman alongside local legends Frank & Mimi. We weren’t joking when we talked about keeping it chill – the lush, green amphitheatre is dotted with cosy couches and you are welcome to bring your own deck chairs. You can also max out the good vibes by planning a little coastal staycation – check out the locals guide to what’s good over here.
