Swine, steins and schnitties – where to celebrate Oktoberfest in Brisbane

If you’ve noticed a sudden spike in the amount of people getting around in dirndls and lederhosen, we can assure you it’s not something in the water – it’s Oktoberfest season, baby! Despite the fact that we are nowhere near Germany, us Australians love to get amongst the spirit of the traditional European holiday – hey, if there’s beer, pretzels and schnitzels involved, we’re all in! We’ve scouted around to find the best Oktoberfest celebrations happening in Brisbane this year, so raise your stein and get ready to party.

If you’re down to experience the whole breadth of German culture (not just the food), Oktoberfest Brisbane at the Brisbane Showgrounds is the place to do it. This event is actually Australia’s largest German festival, spread across two weekends of authentic eats, interactive displays, ridiculous competitions and live entertainment. Whether you want to check out an authentic oompah band, sample some of the world’s best German brews or watch men dressed in lederhosen compete for who is the strongest, this is your best chance.

Speaking of authenticity, it doesn’t get much more legit than the Brisbane German Club – and you’d best believe this fine institution puts on one heck of a show for Oktoberfest. From October 26–28, the club will be coming alive with its traditional range of German beer, food and entertainment. There are no tickets to this event, so if you’re keen to get in on the celebrations it’s best to show up early to avoid missing out (this event is wildly popular).

There are some top spots around town getting into the Oktoberfest spirit with German-inspired menus and activities all throughout October. It would be remiss of us not to mention The Bavarians – Bavarian Beerhaus, Munich Brauhaus and The Bavarian. Each of these venues is hosting its own unique celebrations across the month, as well as serving up authentic German fare as usual. You can catch live music, Bier-lympics, cabaret dancers and even eating challenges across the next couple of weeks – to check out what’s happening near you, head to the Bavarians website. Other local spots putting on some delicious German eats and brews include Welcome to Bowen Hills, The Montague Hotel and Pumpyard Bar and Brewery.
