Swine, steins and schnitties – where to celebrate Oktoberfest in Brisbane

If you’ve noticed a sudden spike in the amount of people getting around in dirndls and lederhosen, we can assure you it’s not something in the water – it’s Oktoberfest season, baby! Despite the fact that we are nowhere near Germany, us Australians love to get amongst the spirit of the traditional European holiday – hey, if there’s beer, pretzels and schnitzels involved, we’re all in! We’ve scouted around to find the best Oktoberfest celebrations happening in Brisbane this year, so raise your stein and get ready to party.

Oktoberfest BrisbaneIt would be remiss of us to do any sort of Oktoberfest round-up without mentioning the biggest celebration in the southern hemisphere – yep, Oktoberfest Brisbane is back at Bowen Hills! The two-weekend affair takes over Brisbane Showgrounds with a smorgasbord of authentic German culture – from the food through to the entertainment (and even the heritage and history), this is a must-do for anyone who loves to party like a Bavarian.

Oktoberfest Beer RunFancy a little sweat with your steins? Work off the calories of your precious biers at the Oktoberfest Beer Run, an event that combines the somewhat opposite pastimes of exercise and casual alcohol consumption. The Beer Run will see joggers (please pronounce with a soft j for maximum European effect) visit five killer Brisbane breweries to drink some top-notch frothies. Costumes are encouraged.

The BavariansIf the venue is named after it, it must be legit – which is why The Bavarians (Munich Brauhaus, The Bavarian and Beerhaus) are your one-stop party shop for all things Oktoberfest. Each of these venues is hosting its own unique celebrations across the month, as well as serving up authentic German fare as usual. You can catch live music, Bier-lympics, cabaret dancers and even eating challenges across the next couple of weeks – to check out what’s happening near you, head to the Bavarians website.

Brisbane Night MarketFor some adorable wholesome fun this Oktoberfest, the Brisbane Night Market has got you well and truly covered. This Rocklea gem will be putting on a serious spread of German market-style eats – think pretzels, funnel cakes, a pork spit roast, sausages and plenty of beers (naturally). Live entertainment will set the mood, and those with roomy tums can have a crack at the metre-long sausage eating competition – good luck with that.

Soapbox BeerHoly schnit! The Valley’s newest craft-beer haven is going all out for its first Oktoberfest, putting on a whole weekend of delicious fare. The gang is brewing some German-style craft beers for the occasion – and if you’re never tasted a Soapbox beer before, we can guarantee these are going to be delish. The kitchen will also be pumping out old-fashioned German eats, so don that dirndl and get going.

The Sunset SocialThe good people of West End deserve an Oktoberfest event that is chill and community oriented – and The Sunset Social has delivered in spades! This Friday night fun-fest will take over Davies Park with a dose of German culture minus the exorbitant prices, making it a great option for families. From steins to bratwursts to lederhosen costumes to freshly baked brezn, you’ll find it all here.
