Unreal reality – Patricia Piccinini’s mind-bending sculptures are coming to GOMA

There’s something rather confronting about coming face-to-face with the unfamiliar, and one person who knows how to play on this dynamic is Patricia Piccinini. The Melbourne-based artist has made a name for herself by creating visual art that truly crosses the boundaries between reality and fantasy, all while remaining rooted in a semblance of believability. Her strange hybrid sculptures that feature creatures from her imagination have drawn the admiration of people around the world, and a whole collection of them are coming to Brisbane for our viewing pleasure. Patricia Piccinini: Curious Affection is coming exclusively to GOMA from March 24 to August 5, bringing the sort of art you have to see with your own eyes.

GOMA has played host to a whole bunch of landmark events, but Patricia Piccinini: Curious Affection is going to go down as one of the gallery’s most exciting exhibitions to date. Known most prominently for her mind-bendingly lifelike sculptures, Patricia’s work at large explores the coexistence of humanity and the natural world, as well as the social and moral impact that scientific research, genetics and biotechnology have on people, animals and our planet. Curious Affection will be Patricia’s most ambitious exhibition to date, bringing 50 new and recent works across sculpture, photography, video, drawing and installation to occupy all of GOMA’s ground floor galleries.

Patricia Piccinini: Curious Affection will be showcasing some of the artist’s most famous and recognisable works. You can catch a glimpse of The Bond (the eerily life-like sculpture of a woman lovingly cradling one of Patricia’s kooky creatures), along with Big Mother, The Comforter, and The Carrier. The exhibition is also featuring some brand-new works and installations that have never been seen by the public. A large-scale sculpture will be suspended in GOMA’s atrium as a continuation of Patricia’s controversial hot air balloon work The Skywhale, which was originally commissioned to mark the Centenary of Canberra back in 2013. Another fresh installation comes in the form of major new work The Field, a landscape of some 3000-odd genetically modified flower sculptures designed to create a vast, multisensory environment – and you’d better believe it will make for some prime Instagramming.

Patricia Piccinini: Curious Affection is opening at GOMA from Saturday March 24 for a very limited time – you can grab your tickets now through GOMA.
