A mammoth milestone and the theatrical event of the year – Queensland Theatre’s 2020 Season has been announced

It's the 1980s in a housing estate on the outskirts of Brisbane. A young boy and his mute brother are soon to be erroneously inducted into a complicated world of drugs, crime and domestic violence. Their mum is about to end up in Brisbane's infamous Boggo Road Gaol, and they will be sent to live with their estranged alcoholic father thereafter. This is the story described by award-winning journalist-turned-novelist Trent Dalton in his debut book, Boy Swallows Universe. It is also the story that is about to have its own stage adaptation, having just been announced as the theatrical event of the coming Queensland Theatre 2020 Season.

The huge announcement of the Queensland Theatre 2020 season is already generating a worthy buzz, with Boy Swallows Universe joining a stellar list of live performances scheduled for next year. Adopted Queensland playwright David Williamson will lead the run of shows in February with the comedy Emerald City, followed by Triple X, Othello, The Holidays, The Children, Boy Swallows Universe, Prima Facie and Phaedra. 50 per cent of these shows are brand new stories, world-first premieres for audiences of Queensland Theatre next year.

That’s not the only reason why Queensland Theatre’s new season will bring audiences to their feet. In 2020, Australia’s third-largest theatre company will celebrate a mammoth milestone – half a century of sharing stage stories. It will also be the final season under the directorship of Sam Strong, who has overseen record-breaking ticket sales and numerous critically acclaimed productions in his four years as Artistic Director for the company.

Evocative and entertaining, the Queensland Theatre 2020 season looks set to impress audiences near and far as it showcases a spectacular smorgasbord of Queensland and Australian talent. More information on the shows and ticket sales can be found through the Queensland Theatre website.
