The vinyl countdown – rare gems, hot releases and live shows rule 2019 Record Store Day in Brisbane

In a world that is largely concerned with making everything digital, the popularity and love of vinyl cannot be understated. The warmth, nostalgia and physical experience that comes with putting a record on it something that you simply can’t translate to an online experience – so it makes sense that we love to celebrate vinyl (and all the amazing places that source it for us). From rare releases to live bands and even carpark parties, here are the best things happening in Brisbane on Saturday April for 13 for Record Store Day 2019.

Sonic Sherpa: This Stones Corner music haven isn’t content with just keeping its Record Store Day celebrations indoors in 2019 – there’s a party taking over the Stones Corner Hotel carpark as well! The free, all-ages shindig has a killer line-up of local talent including Halfway, Tape/Off, Dumb Things and Gooby Jim & The Goobs, joined by Sydney outfit Mope City! Add beer, food trucks and plenty of vinyl to seal the deal.

Jet Black Cat Music: West End’s home of wax keeps turning up the heat year on year for its RSD festivities, and 2019 is no exception. Get in early to nab some exclusive releases, snack on baked goods while you wait in line or simply swing by to catch one of the smashing local acts playing – we’re talking Obscure Orchestra, Sweater Curse, Jeremy Neale, First Beige and Desmond Cheese all performing for free.

Tym Guitars: Lollies, lemonade and live bands – can you think of a more delicious and wholesome Record Store Day combination? Fortitude Valley’s premier music store will be hosting a party with raffles, treats and loads of new records for you to score, as well as live sets from Brainbeau, Bin Licker and Soot.

Phase 4: If you’re into heavier music and local releases, Phase 4 is the place to be on RSD. You can nab vinyl releases from Brisbane punk and post-punk legends The Same 13, The Hardons and The Lemmings – plus, members from the band will be hanging out for photo opps during the day. Later in the arvo, the incomparable Robert Forster will be playing an acoustic set of tunes from his new LP with violinist Karin Bäumler – not to be missed.

Monster Robot Party: This Red Hill basement haunt’s RSD offering brings a new meaning to the phrase ‘try before you buy’. Resident spinner Phil Smart will be helming a gang of hot-as-hell local DJs playing vinyl in store all day – and everything you hear will be up for sale. The shop has also recently acquired some rarities across hip-hop LPs, funk and disco 12s, classic Aussie rock and loads more.

Relove Vinyl: Running alongside vintage hotspot Relove Vintage, Relove Vinyl is a primo spot to pick up some bumper rare releases on Record Store Day. No joke – the team has about 180 of the official RSD releases secured to come in for the day, so you’ll just have to rock up and see what goodness is there to be unearthed (fingers crossed for Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody on a picture disc!).

Record Exchange: If you’ve never flipped through the whopping selection of discs on display at The City’s beloved Record Exchange, you simply haven’t lived. This music mecca will have some killer deals up for grabs on RSD, including buy three and get three free – which shouldn’t be hard when there are more than 200,000 records to choose from.

Rockaway Records: You might not think a Westfield shopping centre would yield much in the way of vintage vinyl and Record Store Day finds, but that would be an incorrect assumption – Carindale’s Rockaway Records is jam-packed with goodness ripe for the picking. Doors open at 7:30 am and the first 40 customers on the day get a free RSD tote bag – so get in early and try your luck.

West End Record Fair: Okay, so this one isn’t an actual record store – but it’s a gosh darn institution so we’re happy to include it. By some divine coincidence, the next instalment of West End’s beloved Record Fair falls on RSD – so you can dig through crates of the good stuff to find some true pre-loved gold.
