Coinciding each year with National Recycling Week, the Recreate Fashion Show and Twilight Market is a perfect combination of spectacle, education and good old-fashioned fun. Brisbane City Council originally created the event to celebrate Brisbane residents’ recycling efforts, with Recreate continuing to grow bigger and better every year. The showcase sees talented Brisbane designers create mind-blowing one-of-a-kind garments constructed completely from recycled items, paraded down a runway in the bustling King George Square. It’s not just about the amazing couture creations – the market component showcases handmade artisan wares from the BrisStyle crew, while a bevy of Brisbane’s favourite food trucks will keep everyone fed and happy.
This year’s talented crop of Recreate artists are a great mix of young guns and seasoned veterans, each taking on the challenging task of creating a bespoke garment from recycled materials. The 2018 edition of Recreate sees artists stray from the previous realm of strictly paper to also include other recyclable materials such as plastic, magazines and packaging. Futurist Jonathan Pampling is returning for his third year at Recreate, joining a line-up including design industry royalty Sharka Bosakova, costume designer to the stars Cindy Vogels, new romantic Lucy-Belle Rayner, vintage-loving Jaye Wolf from Yesterday People, multidisciplinary creative Robyn Woodrow, sustainable artisan Sofia Moreno-Marcos and whiz-kid Connor O’Grady. Design collective The New Garde is also bringing together five talented individuals to collaborate on a garment.
Ready to take a look at the future of fashion? Entry to Recreate is totally free, so head to King George Square on Friday November 16 to watch the action kick off from 4:00 pm.
