Following the immense success of the 2018 event, Sea to the City – Brisbane’s Bug and Oyster Trail, is returning in 2019, dedicating an entire day to fresh seafood on Sunday October 13. The two primary tastebud targets for the second Sea to the City event will again be bugs and oysters – forms and varieties of which will be simmered, steamed, sauteed and served in pop-up sites across 17 of Brisbane’s best riverfront restaurants from Eagle Street Pier to Customs House. While the focus of the event is to worship the flavours and forms of the aforementioned bugs and oysters in all their glory, the participating restaurants will all have other in-venue food options on the day, so there will be something to suit every palate.
The full menu for Sea to the City is yet to be released, but we do have more than one exciting sneak peek to get your mouth watering. Patina at Customs House will be hosting a Moet Rose Garden Pop-Up, serving a mouth-watering Moreton Bay bug croissant. Riverbar & Kitchen have come through with a bunch of exciting items, including New Orleans fried oyster po’ boy, crispy Moreton Bay bug burger with mango salsa and spicy mayo, grilled Moreton Bay bug skewers, and to wash it all down, Riverbar Frose and Rosetinis. Blackbird Bar & Grill will dish out Moreton Bay bugs with their own ‘Bugonaise’, a fried bug BLT and smoked oyster with cream cheese spread and seaweed crostini. Madame Wu is bringing its signature Asian flavours to the menu with grilled bugs and XO sauce and a miso-cured and grilled cobia sandwich with Asian tartare and watercress. Navala is bringing the heat with its Brazilian barbecue cooking and slinging woodfired and charcoal barbecue bugs with lime chilli and salted black bean, served with creamy mayo and chips. We don’t know about you guys but we will certainly be trying one of each.
Other venues hosting pop-up and seafood experiences during Sea to the City include Kingsleys, Sake, Friday’s Riverside, Riverland, Cha Cha Char, Mr & Mrs Gs, Jellyfish, IL Centro and more! Attendees will also be treated to live music on the day and heaps of licensed areas to enjoy wine and stunning river views. Entry is free, although you might want to stock up a stash of cash so you can devour as much seafood unimpeded on the day as possible. The food fiesta will begin at 11:00 am and run through til 6:00 pm, so you can snack and sample your way all the way through the day until the sun sets.
