Spanish Baroque: Brandenburg and Circa is all about combining the thrilling visuals of super-human strength with the equally exciting sounds of high-intensity baroque music. Artistic Directors Paul Dyer and Yaron Lifschitz have carefully crafted a program that highlights the skills of both the orchestra and the physical performers, creating a live soundtrack to movement that has been timed to perfection. The musical core of the show is a feisty pasticcio created by Paul Dyer inspired by the Brandenburg’s ARIA Award-winning album Tapas – think loads of percussion, guitar and theorbo laced with lashings of violin bravado to set the scene.
This isn’t the first time that Brandenburg and Circa have collaborated – the two teams came together in 2015 for the Helpmann Award-winning French Baroque, which earned a litany of five-star reviews. This show focused primarily on beauty and elegance, so the team wanted to go in a different direction for Spanish Baroque. Rich colours, raw flesh and sublime baroque music are fused to convey earthy, powerful themes that are more rooted in contact and conflict. The switch in focal points between these two creations has set the scene for a night that is sure to end in gasps.
