Over the last few years, Brisbane has gained a roster of artist collectives and community spaces from South Brisbane’s Merivale Studios to Woolloongabba’s cafe-record-store hybrid Echo and Bounce. Studio Maverik has quickly become a touchstone in this burgeoning new age for Brisbane’s art-minded folks.
The creative community is tucked behind an out-of-use service station in Spring Hill, housed in the multi-use space The Station (a converted 1940s warehouse that was once a Black & White cab mechanics). Founded in 2021 by local artists Frances Powell and Rhianna Phillips to renew the local visual-arts community after the events of 2020, Studio Maverik has fostered a passionate following of established and aspiring artists. Best known for Still Life Drawing classes, its stacked events calendar has been curated to connect and showcase Brisbane’s artistic community.
For its Winter Markers Market, Studio Maverik has teamed up with gin distillery, restaurant and event space Warehouse 25 to host more than 15 local makers on Friday July 19 from 5:00 pm. On the line-up, you’ll find a diverse array of goodies from the city’s leading local creatives and small businesses. “Beyond being a platform for financial support for our makers, this market fosters a sense of community, connecting artists with their audience and the local creative scene,” says co-founder Frances.
Expect stalls stocked with: prints, zines and more by Forge Forward’s Amy Crow, screen printed creations from Silk + Squeeg, new apparel and even Studio Maverik merch from embroidery house Feed Dogs Studio, one-of-a-kind gems from glasswork artist Lawn Bowls, colourful compositions by Shanae Duncan, designs from cult-favourite tattoo artist Simple Hands, original paintings from Hamish Wilson and plenty more.
You’ll also get to ring in the weekend with warming cups of house-brewed mulled wine and even let the cards decide with an intimate tarot reading from Elaine Crow. Local artist Jake Reston will also be completing a live painting installation whilst Studio Maverik’s resident DJ Greaves spins some tunes as well.
Discover the full Winter Markets Market program via the Studio Maverik website. The event is free and stalls will be cashless.
