Brisbane’s Outdoor Gallery comes to life with the uplifting Sunny Side Up exhibition

Light boxes, banners, vitrines and cliff walls will all become canvases for some of Brisbane’s best emerging artistic talent as Brisbane City Council’s newest Outdoor Gallery exhibition Sunny Side Up opens on November 30.

As we reach the tail end of a globally challenging year, the Sunny Side Up exhibition is here to spread some cheer through Brisbane. Bringing a bunch of local streets, laneways and public spaces to life, the vibrant outdoor exhibition will focus on the beauty of Brisbane and why so many of us choose to call the city home. Its identity, culture and geography will be explored through the unique perspectives of some of our best young artists. Expect to see references to blooming jacarandas, blue skies and hilly suburbia in a range of public artworks spanning photography, video, sculpture, illustration and more. Curated by up-and-comers Alex Holt and Sarah Thomson, the exhibition shines the spotlight on young local artists under the age of 35 including Holly Anderson, Hailey Atkins, Jordan Azcune, Kinly Grey, Charlie Hillhouse, Amelia Hine, Phoebe Paradise, Parallel Park, Monica Rohan and Julia Scott Green.

Sunny Side Up will be on display around Brisbane City Council’s Outdoor Gallery for free from November 30 to April 18, 2021. The Outdoor Gallery project makes art more accessible to local residents and visitors, while also beautifying our public spaces and transforming average streets into engaging artworks. From a series of light boxes in King George Square and Fish, Hutton and Eagle Lanes, to banners in Irish, Giffin and Edison Lanes, vitrines in Elizabeth, Edward and Queen Streets and recent addition, evening projections at the Howard Smith Wharves, it certainly beats a couple of plain white walls inside a gallery. The Sunny Side Up exhibition will include a number of talks and curator-led walking tours – keep watch here for more information to come soon.
